Does Caltech Have Graphic Design?

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is an elite research university located in Pasadena, California. Founded in 1891, Caltech is a private university renowned for its science and engineering programs.

It has produced 35 Nobel Laureates and 72 National Medal of Science recipients. But does this top-notch university offer graphic design?

The answer is yes. Caltech offers a number of courses in graphic design as part of its undergraduate major in Media Arts and Technology (MAT). MAT is an interdisciplinary program designed to develop students’ skills in areas such as multimedia production, video game development, interactive design, and motion graphics.

The MAT program focuses on developing students’ creative problem-solving skills through project-based learning. Students are expected to take core classes such as Computer Science & Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, Humanities & Social Science, and Interdisciplinary Projects.

Within these core classes are courses related to graphic design such as Digital Imaging & Design, Motion Graphics, Interactive Design, 3D Modeling & Animation, Visual Effects Design & Production. These courses provide students with the skills necessary to create professional-level graphics for digital media projects.

In addition to these courses within the MAT program, Caltech also offers several elective courses related to graphic design in other departments such as Communication Sciences & Disorders and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS). These electives include topics such as Web Design Fundamentals and Advanced Digital Imaging Techniques.

Caltech also offers a number of extracurricular activities related to graphic design such as workshops on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator software packages hosted by the EECS department. Additionally, student organizations such as the Graphic Design Club facilitate networking opportunities with alumni who work in the field of graphic design.

Conclusion: In conclusion, while Caltech has not traditionally been associated with graphic design programs or courses due to its focus on science and engineering; it does offer a range of courses related to graphic design within its Media Arts and Technology major. In addition to this major program offering coursework related to graphic design; Caltech also offers several elective courses related to the field across various departments along with extracurricular activities that facilitate networking opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in graphic design.
