One of the most popular photo editing techniques in Photoshop is the use of Silhouettes. A Silhouette is a dark outline or shape that stands out against a lighter background.
It can be used to add drama to a photo, draw attention to the subject, or create an interesting composition. Silhouettes can easily be created using Photoshop’s selection tools, layer masks, and adjustment layers.
Step 1: Make a selection of the object you want to Silhouette. The easiest way is to use the Quick Selection Tool (W) or the Magic Wand Tool (W). Click on your object and drag your mouse around it until it’s completely selected.
Step 2: Create a new layer by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N. This will create a layer that sits above your original image. Select this new layer and press Ctrl + Backspace, which will fill it with black.
Step 3: Invert the selection by pressing Ctrl + Shift + I. This will select everything outside of the area you had previously selected.
Step 4: Create a new layer mask by clicking on the ‘Add Layer Mask’ icon at the bottom of the layers palette.
This will give you a white box next to your black layer – this is your layer mask.
Step 5: With your layer mask selected, press Ctrl + Backspace. This will fill your mask with black, which will hide everything outside of your selection.
Step 6: Finally, to make your Silhouette pop, add an adjustment layer above your black layer and select ‘Curves’ from the drop-down menu. Adjusting the curves here will allow you to brighten or darken your background as needed.
